Wondering how to make a 3D dinosaur head as easily as possible? Well, here's a super quick, easy way to make a T Rex head costume using felt! Plus, this dinosaur head costume even has a chomping jaw.

We only have one son and we like to make sure he can express all his inner boy-ness and love of cars, trains, firefighting, and dinosaurs to his heart's content. For a very long time now he has loved dinosaurs, even more so after we watched Jurassic Park and Jurassic World with him during some family movie nights.

Every time we go to the library and check out books, he always grabs books featuring dinosaurs. One of his favorite books for me to read to him is "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?"

When the kids all play pretend, he likes to pretend he is a big scary dinosaur (specifically a T-rex).

With Halloween fast approaching, my son has mentioned several things he wanted to be – a firefighter being toward the top. But, then I was approached by KiwiCo and they wanted to know if I wanted to receive their Chomping Mechanical Dinosaur Costume kit (ages 5-16) in exchange for review. I happily said yes!

Last month we checked out the Kiwi Crate Disk Launcher and this month we received both this dinosaur head costume and a DIY unicorn costume (for my daughters, of course).

How to Make a 3D Dinosaur Head

If you want to make a T Rex head costume with a moving mechanical jaw, be sure to grab KiwiCo's kit in their online store. It's super easy to put together! In fact, that's half the fun of getting this as a kit versus pre-made.

The booklet that comes with it has some fun facts about dinosaurs as well as the instructions so you can teach your child fun new things as well. My son though thought it was awesome that the book had a picture of the same T-Rex toy that he owns so we had to take a picture of it!

The dinosaur head costume comes with a pre-hole-punched felt head template, several painted brass fasteners, and felt tape used to assemble it together.

All you need to do is line up the correct holes and secure it with a brass fastener, over and over again.

You need to indent the felt to make T Rex nostrils, and adhere the googly eyes, eyebrows, and teeth with provided sticky tabs or adhesive backs. You also insert the spikes on the head through small slits in the top.

The mechanical jaw is attached via a simple plastic bolt and screw and string.

The whole thing took maybe 15 minutes to put together. My son (who is five) and my daughter who is 8 followed the instructions with its simple and clear directions and pictures and assembled the dinosaur head mask all by themselves with minimal help from me.

Anyway, the kids loved putting it together, and my son and my daughter, known to fight and pick at each other often, got along SO well while they were assembling it! In fact, they even played happily together the rest of the day! It was amazing!

After we put together the felt dinosaur head my son said, "I didn't know you could make costumes!" Guess that shows you how crafty I am, especially when it comes to Halloween costumes if he didn't know this (even though I did make bat wings for my twins one year also using felt)!

I had him put on his very cool T Rex shirt and khaki shorts (from Stitch Fix for boys) and pose. I have ordered some simple green shirts and shorts for him to wear along with the T Rex head costume, as well as the felt claws that came in the kit.

All the kids have had such a great time sharing the homemade dinosaur head mask and "biting" each other with it. My son now decidedly wants to be a T Rex for Halloween.
